With this particular installation, the builder had used a steel lid for the sump pit. Initially this is not a problem, but over the course of time, this steel lid will rust and deteriorate to the point where chunks of the lid will start to fall into the sump pit and the lid will no longer be structurally sound.
In the left corner of the 2nd picture, a significant amount of construction debris was removed from the sump pit to include a large chunk of concrete from when the basement slab was poured. A sump pit should be clean and free of debris that could potentially jam the sump pump. This particular instance is an extreme case of poor workmanship on the part of the plumbing contractor.
The installation of the Pro Series 2200 includes a separate pump, a 12 volt battery specifically designed for this system, a computerized control panel and a shelf to hold the control panel. The discharge line for the back-up pump is normally tied into the existing sump pump discharge line, but the other option is to have a separate discharge line in case the primary discharge line becomes obstructed.
Surge protection is recommended for the Pro Series 2200 whether through a surge strip or whole house surge protection.
